Coaching & Creative Mentoring for Writers

two.figures.96.png

Hillside aims to be a writer's best reader. Whether providing a student writer with instruction and inspiration or an established author with feedback and direction, we work to gain as clear a view of the writer's vision as possible and, with that sustained perspective, to uncover opportunities waiting in or behind the writer's words.

Coaching and mentoring can take many forms. Depending on the client and the project, our approach emphasizes polish or process. The writer with a complete manuscript may seek fine editorial attention on the sentence level while the story- or essay-writer between drafts looks for help shaping her latest effort and refining her goals. We also delight in working with new writers, designing instruction that encourages development of their agility and versatility as sentence-makers.

What matters first and most is the constructive relationship we cultivate with a writer — in person or from a distance — by applying a balance of verbal precision and imaginative vision.

To begin, contact us with a description of your project, your goals, and your recognized needs. We will be glad to respond with recommendations for structuring our work together. Coaching sessions are one-hour long.

"Allan has been an invaluable mentor. He has kindled in me a passion not only for words but also for the often overlooked images in daily life and complexities in characters. And he has done so in a way that can only be described as the 'Allan way'—meticulous and innovative."
— L.S. | San Antonio, TX

"Picture the combination of your favorite professor and your idealized version of your favorite writer, and you've got Allan. He is one of the most thoughtful, thorough, and skilled editors and teachers I have ever known."
